Uveitis refers to intraocular inflammation in the anterior, intermediate, or posterior segment of the eye that results from infection, systemic immune disorders, or aberrations in ocular immunity. Among working-age adults in developed nations, uveitis is the fourth leading cause of blindness. Anterior uveitis accounts for approximately 90% of uveitis cases in community settings and 60% of cases in tertiary centers. Anterior uveitis involves inflammation of the anterior structures of the uvea, including the iris and ciliary body, and is characterized by the presence of white blood cells and proteins (known as flare) in the anterior chamber.
